What is Voice Thread?

A VoiceThread is a collaborative, multimedia slide show that holds images, documents, and videos and allows people to navigate slides and leave comments in 5 ways - using voice (with a mic or telephone), text, audio file, or video (via a webcam). Share a VoiceThread with friends, students, and colleagues for them to record comments too.

How is it being used in the classroom?

Lets Get Started

Go to voicethread.com to create an account for your class have each student create an account using a valid email address. Add your students as contacts so that they can see and comment on Voice Threads made by you and class members. Each student should use their name and create an avatar so the rest of the class knows who is talking/commenting within a Voice Thread.

6 Steps for Creating a Voice Thread

  1. Find and Upload pictures or video - this can be from the web or from your computer

  2. Rearrange your images by click and drag

  3. Make narrative to go along with images

  4. Create a title and description of your work

  5. Save your work

  6. Share your work by inviting others to comment on it.

And that is all.

Here are some basic tips to help you get the most out of using VoiceThread with your class*

Start slow and be project based. Don't register for an account and the next day introduce VoiceThread to a Lab filled with 26 students (or educators) Instead, find a simple project that lets them learn the basics at their own pace, e.g. a book discussion, a language photo biography, a mathcast, a discussion of a video etc.

Great VoiceThreads are made before the computer is turned on. Have the students prepare, create, and edit long before they sit down to 'publish' their ideas. Even if the VoiceThread will never be shared outside of the class the students should take their commenting and their work seriously. Help is always just a click away. VoiceThread is an application that works inside your web Browser and is constantly communicating back and forth with our servers. If your connection is poor you might experience some strange behavior. When you do have trouble, first refresh your web page, if that doesn’t clear up the issue then try deleting your Browsers cache and signing out and then in again.

Network with other VoiceThreaders. Very nice folks can be found in our forum and in other great communties as well.
